    Initial Uses for Invokana<\/h2>\n

    Invokana, also known under its generic name of canagliflozin, was first created as a class of drugs known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors. The purpose of this drug was to lower the body’s blood sugar by allowing the kidneys themselves to remove excess blood sugar directly through the urine. This prescription drug, when used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise, has been prescribed to many suffering with type 2 diabetes. Other common branded versions of this drug include Invokamet XR and Invokamet.     Recent FDA Findings<\/h2>\n

    In May 2017, the FDA made an important safety announcement regarding the use of Invokana for treating and managing type 2 diabetes. Specifically, two large clinical trials found that this prescription medication is linked to an increased risk of leg, foot, and toe amputations, as well as ketoacidosis and heart attack in patients.<\/p>\n

    In the clinical trials, 2,000 individuals with type 2 diabetes were monitored; half the group was treated with Invokana, whereas the other half was given a placebo pill. The specific findings were that the risk of amputation was about twice as high in patients who took Invokana versus those who took a placebo.<\/p>\n

    As a result of these findings, the FDA has encouraged all patients taking Invokana (or another version of canagliflozin) for management of type 2 diabetes to speak with their health care professionals in order to determine whether use should be discontinued. Furthermore, the FDA has been urging health care professionals to better warn their patients of these potential risks when prescribing Invokana or any similar medication.<\/p>\n
