But the law of averages and actual statistics paint a very different picture. Some states have particularly bad drivers. The insurance industry publication <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carinsurancecomparison.com\/which-states-have-the-worst-drivers\/#Table2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>CarInsurancecomparison.com<\/em><\/a> has some interesting things to say about Texas drivers. We placed fourth on their 2017 \u201cbad driver list.\u201d The higher the ranking, the worse things are.<\/p><div id=\"glm-mobile-toc-box\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/div>\n<p>The categories used to come up with this ranking were: fatality-rate per 100 million miles traveled, failure to obey basic laws (traffic signals, seat belts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terrybryant.com\/blogs\/new-texting-while-driving-law\">distracted driving laws<\/a>, invalid driver\u2019s license, drunk driving, speeding) and careless driving. The data was compiled from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) figures.<\/p>\n<p>Texas has ranked as a top-five state with the worst drivers since <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1hj3ZLs8ku20nH0a95VrLfm5GaZjWWzI8MHinlPhIZYE\/edit#gid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the first study<\/a> was conducted in 2012. The only good news was that we dropped from last year\u2019s survey. But for the past four consecutive years, the behavior that has killed the most people is\u00a0drunk driving, and this year is no different. A total of <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">1,552 fatal crashes<\/a>\u00a0with an alcohol-impaired driver to blame was good for fifth place in that category. Our best (safest) ranking was 20th in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terrybryant.com\/houston-car-accident-lawyer\/speeding-accident-lawyer\">speeding accident lawsuit<\/a> category.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, it\u2019s an improvement over the previous year. CarInsurancecomparison.com said the <a href=\"http:\/\/amarillo.com\/local-news\/2016-12-26\/study-finds-texas-has-nation-s-worst-drivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Lone Star state had the worst drivers<\/a> in the country in their 2016 report, which revealed that 3,558 died on Texas roads, highest in the U.S. Actually, that year Texans tied with Louisianans for the worst.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2016 report, Texas was the <strong>only state<\/strong> to rank among the <strong>14 worst<\/strong> in <strong>each<\/strong> of the study\u2019s measured categories. Our 2016 results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>9th in fatalities per 100 million drivers<\/li>\n<li>12th in failure to obey traffic laws<\/li>\n<li>3rd in drunk driving<\/li>\n<li>9th in speeding<\/li>\n<li>14th in careless driving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That year, Texas drivers scored a 47, the highest score translating into the worst ranking. Texas and Louisiana\u2019s ascension to the co-top spot knocked Montana out of the 2015 No. 1 ranking.<\/p>\n<p>But Texas has it all over Oklahoma in one particular category. Another publication which surveys the safe driving scene \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/smartasset.com\/auto\/states-with-the-worst-drivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Smart Asset<\/a> \u2013 reveals that only 74% of drivers north of the Red River are insured. This means that when there\u2019s a car accident, odds are much higher someone will be paying out of pocket \u2013 if at all.<\/p>\n<p>Smart Asset\u2019s research also reveals that Republican-leaning states have better drivers.
